Unfortunately Eddie Guerrero would wrestle his last match on November 9, 2005 against Mr. Kennedy on a taping of Smackdown. Just two days later he was found in his hotel room by his nephew Chavo, and was pronounced dead at the scene. He died of acute heart failure caused by underlying atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Much like many other wrestlers who died at a young age, rumors began to circulate about Guerrero and his alleged steroid use. Then, on March 19, 2007 the rumors were confirmed, as Sports Illustrated printed a story confirming Guerrero’s steroid use. He was linked to a form of HGH called HCG, and the steroid Stanozolol. Eddie’s death shook the wrestling world and left WWE without one of its biggest stars, but it also had a couple silver linings. His death helped bring WWE’s Wellness Policy into effect, which would have saved Eddie’s life had it been instituted while he was still alive. Guerrero’s passing also began a ground swell of support for his close friend Rey Mysterio, and Rey rode that wave of momentum all the way to a World Heavyweight Championship victory at Wrestlemania 22 against Randy Orton and Kurt Angle.
