Why Bret The Hitman Hart Is The Best Ever

Bret Hart Champion - Wrestling Examiner

Hart helping make Austin a superstar was the last gift he would intentionally give WWF. He would defeat Undertaker at SummerSlam ’97 to win his 5th WWF Championship, a record at the time, and then would enter one final feud with his infamous rival, Shawn Michaels. The Feud would end at Survivor Series ’97 with the now infamous Montreal Screwjob. It was a complete show of disrespect by a company to the man who helped keep it alive for so long. Bret had signed a lucrative deal with WCW at the behest of Vince McMahon, but had made it clear that he had no intentions on dropping the title to Michaels in his home country of Canada before leaving. McMahon would tell Hart that he would not have to drop the title to Michaels that night, only to come to ringside during the match and call for the bell. Michaels was declared the winner and the new WWF Champion, Bret Hart’s WWF career would end in controversy and shame. Bret would leave to WCW but not before leaving a couple of parting gifts. One was in the form of a punch, as he struck McMahon in the face backstage after Survivor Series. The second was less noticeable at the time, but in essence Bret Hart gave the WWF fans the gift of Mr. McMahon. As crazy as it sounds, Bret Hart is indirectly responsible for the existence of the Attitude Era. Without Bret Hart putting Steve Austin over at WrestleMania 13 and making him an instant star, the Attitude Era might never have had its hero and protagonist. Similarly, if Bret never gets screwed over by Vince then maybe the evil Mr. McMahon character never gets created, and the Attitude Era never gets its villain and counterpart to Stone Cold Steve Austin. Bret just couldn’t help but make wrestling history, even if it was done indirectly some times
