The Macho Man was always a stickler for doing things the right way and honoring the traditions of the wrestling business. He had been a well respected locker room leader in the WWF, and had reportedly ripped into Razor Ramon and Shawn Michaels after their WrestleMania X ladder match went long, robbing 10 performers of their share of the WrestleMania spotlight. When Savage came across Diamond Dallas Page in WCW, he could see something special in him and took a personal interest in helping DDP reach the next level. The two men would enter a feud that would span 8 months and include 1-on-1 matches, tag team matches, a no disqualification match, a falls count anywhere match, and a Las Vegas Death match. The feud did wonders for DDP‘s career, and proved Savage still had the ability to help up and coming talents reach their potential, something Vince McMahon hadn’t allowed him to do in the WWF. The feud was voted Pro Wrestling Illustrated‘s Best of 1997, and it would help propel Savage towards another WCW Championship opportunity. After Feuding with DDP and Lex Luger, Savage would challenge Sting at Spring Stampede 1998 for the WCW Championship. With some help from Kevin Nash, Savage would win and once again be WCW Champion. Unfortunately though, Savage tore his ACL during the match, and would lose the WCW Championship to Hulk Hogan the next night on Nitro, after interference by Bret Hart.
