Chris Leben, a longtime UFC veteran, and member of the original TUF cast, was discovered to have a severe heart condition that may require a heart transplant.
While undergoing routine medical tests as part of his application with the athletic commission to be cleared to fight again, it was discovered that Leben’s heart condition had reduced blood flow from his heart to 18%. Leben was immediately put on medication, and doctors are deciding whether he needs a transplant or if the condition will get better with treatment.
Leben has had well-known troubles with substances, including an admitted severe opiate addiction.
In response, Bellator President Scott Coker, released the following statement:
“We are saddened to hear of Chris Leben’s current health situation and would have loved to see him compete inside the Bellator cage. A fighter’s health and safety is of the utmost importance to us as an organization. We wish Chris the best in his future endeavors and we are happy to provide a platform for him to share his story with people around the world.”
