The 1991 Royal Rumble was set to feature Sgt. Slaughter vs. The Ultimate Warrior for the WWF Championship. In an attempt to secure a future title shot, The Macho King would go to both Slaughter and Warrior and simply request it. Slaughter would agree, but when Warrior refused, Savage interfered in the match and cost him his title. The result was a WrestleMania VII clash between Vince McMahon‘s two biggest stars not named Hulk Hogan. “The Macho King vs. The Ultimate Warrior” was worthy of the WrestleMania marquee alone, but when both men put their careers on the line, it took the match to a whole new level. Fans couldn’t picture either man losing and being forced to retire, but one of them would. In the end, it would be The Ultimate Warrior getting his hand raised, and Savage being forced to hang it up. After the match, “Sensational” Sheri would verbally berate Savage for losing, and begin attacking him while he was down. Ms. Elizabeth, who had been in the live audience, would come to Savage’s rescue and enter the ring to stop Sheri’s attack. Savage and Elizabeth would reunite on screen in a classic WretleMania moment. Macho Man would once again find himself as one of the top babyfaces in the company despite being “retired.” After WrestleMania VII, Savage would commit to the retirement story line and would begin doing color commentary. SummerSlam 1991 was main evented by a kayfabe wedding between Macho Man and Ms. Elizabeth. Jake “The Snake” Roberts and Undertaker crashed the reception and attacked Savage. On October 21st 1991, on Superstars of Wrestling, Jake would cut a promo on Savage and lure him into the ring, tying him up in the ropes and allowing a snake to bite him. The snake was obviously de-fanged and obviously had no venom, but wrestling was still considered legit at the time, and it was a shocking moment for fans. Savage was granted his reinstatement after the incident, and would defeat Jake in their two official bouts.
