After his retirement, Savage would stay out of the public eye, with the exception of a couple of candid interviews. He would reunite with his high school sweetheart and they would marry in 2010. Those close to Savage say reconnecting with his old flame made him complete again. He had been going through hard times after the death of his ex-wife Elizabeth in 2003, and his retirement from wrestling in late 2004. Sadly for Randy Savage, his life would come to a tragic end on May 20th 2011. While driving with his wife, Savage suffered a massive heart attack and crashed into a tree. It was originally thought Savage was killed by the crash. However, it was later determined he lost control of the vehicle after losing consciousness due to the heart attack. Savage had an enlarged heart and was unaware of it. Hulk Hogan, who shared a doctor with Savage, claims the doctor told him he offered to run tests on Savage’s heart that could have saved his life, but that Savage had refused the test, being more concerned with taking his ill mother home to rest. Savage’s official cause of death was ruled as atherosclerotic heart disease. WWE aired a tribute video for Savage on the May 23rd edition of Monday Night Raw. That night, CM Punk, who had said he considered Randy Savage the real “Mr. WrestleMania,” paid homage to him by wearing pink trunks and yellow boots with stars, just like classic Macho Man. Punk would also adopt the Flying Elbow Drop and incorporate it into his move set, to honor Savage. After a long wait, Randy Savage was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2016.
