Fightful Select has provided an update on WWE NXT Superstar Stephanie Vaquer following her impressive in-ring debut on last week’s show, where she secured a victory over Wren Sinclair during the live CW broadcast. Vaquer’s signing with WWE comes on the heels of her notable match against Mercedes Mone for the TBS Title at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door, which generated considerable buzz in the wrestling community.
According to sources within AEW, Vaquer made a significant impact during her feud and match with Mone. However, it was soon after Forbidden Door that WWE reached out to her, and she quickly made plans to sign with the company. The speed at which Vaquer’s WWE deal came together surprised many in the industry.
Multiple AEW insiders expressed understanding of WWE’s desire to sign a standout talent like Vaquer, especially given their interest in her. However, they were perplexed by WWE’s decision to pull her from her scheduled CMLL dates before she had the chance to drop her titles. At the time of her signing, Vaquer was the reigning CMLL World Women’s and World Women’s Tag Team Champion. After her departure from CMLL, she was stripped of both titles. Nevertheless, Fightful notes that Vaquer’s quick turnaround to compete in WWE’s recent live events in Mexico helped mitigate some of the criticism surrounding her abrupt exit from CMLL.
The report also indicates that WWE officials are pleased with Vaquer’s performance so far, and she appears to be enjoying her experience in NXT.
Furthermore, sources from NJPW and AEW speculate that talents participating in future Forbidden Door events or other co-promoted shows may need to sign agreements preventing immediate transitions to WWE, or at the very least, be under some form of contract rather than making separate arrangements. However, this has not yet been confirmed by officials from NJPW or AEW.
