October 3rd 1987, on an episode of Saturday Night’s Main Event, Savage faced The Honky Tonk Man for the Intercontinental Championship. The match ended in a disqualification when the Hart Foundation interfered on Honky’s behalf. The three began to beat Savage down until Ms. Elizabeth brought help for Savage in the form of WWF Champion Hulk Hogan. The two men cleared the ring, and after a tense moment where it looked like they might come to blows, Savage extended his hand to Hogan, creating The Mega Powers. The combination of Savage’s “Macho Madness” and Hogan’s “Hulkamania” remains the most iconic alliance between any two stars in wrestling history. The only comparison that even comes close would be if Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock would’ve formed a team during the Attitude Era. His new alliance with Hogan made Savage more popular than ever. When the WWF Championship was forced to be vacated prior to WrestleMania IV, a tournament was announced for the show to crown a new champion. Macho Man reached the finals of the tournament, and after outside interference by both Hogan and Andre The Giant, Savage finally connected with his legendary “Flying Elbow Drop,” and pinned “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase to become WWF Champion. It was the first time in over four years that the belt was around the waist of someone other than Hulk Hogan.
